On Tuesday, September 23rd, Anonymous Gallery officially opened it's doors for the first time for a VIP preview event sponsored by Patron, Kiehl's, and Spread Magazine to showcase "PLAF - Autonomous Mechanisms", an exhibition exhibiting the work of world-renowned interventionist artists Eltono and MOMO. The gallery held an exclusive private cocktail reception from 6pm until 8pm where guests such as Dirty, Sexy, Money's Jordana Spiro, Farmer Wants a Wife's Amanda Tudesco, Saturday Night Live's Brett Marcus Cody, American Idol's Constantine Maroulis, DJ-model-musician Catherine Pierce of the Pierces, photographers Alexander Noe and Liam Alexander, designers Abigail Lorick, Lizzie Fortunato, and Celeste Greenberg, artist-filmmaker David Foote, and art-world social David Chines grooved to the beats laid down by model-DJ "Make a Mess Kid" (a.k.a. Artem) and mingled with Anonymous owners Joseph Henrikson and Elura as well as the two artists while viewing their colorful large-scale installation pieces. Immediately following the gallery's opening, several guests piled into a makeshift kayak for action photo's shot by David X Prutting before making their way over to the Randolph for Cat Pierce's DJ
set in the Kiehl's Lounge, the official after-party for Anonymous.

Event Review: Air Questo Launch - Fri, 8/1

This party was great. Cool people, low-key ambiance, good music...it was fun. There was another DJ right before Questlove and he was doing his thing -I'll get his info and put it up later.

Questlove's set was very different from what I heard from him about a year ago at Hiro - last year, he played so much GOOD old school R&B. What was most amazing was that I didn't recognize half of the songs at all. It was an education.

At last week's party, Questlove's set didn't lack didactics, but it was more playful, more mainstream: he played essential, newish hip hop songs and proceeded to play their just-as-good-if-not-better sample sources.

That was fun, but, music geek that I am, I'm looking forward to his set at LOVE on Saturday.

Yeah, this was okay. A party at the Red Bull Space (a lot of those lately) with Nas' music videos playing in the background. DJ Ruckus was spinning, playing some good throwbacks (and apparently DJ Cassidy picked up where he left off).

Oh yeah, people were upping this Motorola phone that could play 2 gigs worth of music. It's supposed to compete with the iPhone, but truth be told, my next phone needs a keyboard (preferably touchscreen) and this didn't have it. And I really like the idea of a cellphone that's basically a computer (mail, internet, music, etc.); this phone was more for people who just want to have their music on their cellphone. If my next phone isn't the iPhone, then I'll probably be going with one of those phones that'll have the Google Android system. Speaking of, here's a phone with that Android...

Yeah, I geek out sometimes.

Movie Review: Hancock

Subtitle: Hancock didn't quite save my day.

Sub-Subtitle: The special effects were good.

As a moviegoer, I didn't enjoy Hancock. Too many loose ends in the plot. Shaky, "Arrested Development" style cinematography. Will Smith's inappropriate casting - purely from an acting perspective. A predictable twist that just wasn't fulfilling. Still, it had some compelling social commentary upon which I'll touch.

But first, let me set it up for you: Ray's is a freelance PR guy who wants to save the world; he's trying to start his own corporate sponsorship initiative to fight extreme poverty, preventable disease, etc. Circumstances arise so that Hancock, LA's not-so-friendly neighborhood ubermensch, casually saves him from an untimely death. Grateful, Ray convinces Hancock to hire him as his publicist to improve his oft-sullied image. As the film progresses, Hancock fights off a few natural (and one supernatural) opponents, and comes into a better sense of himself. This all may sound good, but, like I said, I have my reasons why I didn't like it as a movie.

Will Smith goes through half of the movie playing a caricature of an angry black man, and it's painful to watch. I really would have paid three times as much to see ~~Charlie Murphy~~ Jamie Foxx play the role because 1) he's much more entertaining as an angry brotha and 2) the laws of Hollywood economics (read: Will Smith movies make money)would have never allowed him to play that role.

And the storytelling was weak. The film alludes to Hancock's origins, but it doesn't explore them. Oh, what I would have given to see a cheesy flashback!

Then there's the whole issue of the love interest in the movie. It brings this blog entry back to the topic of race: you have this angry black supa dupa man (what brotha isn't?) dealing with his past, longstanding relationship with a white woman. I won't get into too many details, but this dimension implicitly brings up topics of interracial relationships and their legitimacy. And how appropriate that this movie premiere during the 4th of July weekend, because it's barely been 40 years since interracial marriage became legal in all of the US.

Sometimes a movie needs an underlying piece of intrigue or taboo, like sexual chemistry between its stars, for large amount of people to see it. This is definitely one of those movies.

By the way, less than a month ago, I missed a great occasion to celebrate interracial relationships: every June 12th is Loving Day, the anniversary of the Loving v Virginia Supreme Court Decision, and of course New York City threw a party!
